Higher Education Ministry should Dismiss the Election Monitoring Committee Immediately

Malaysia Youth and Students Democratic Movement(DEMA) believed that the Higher Education Ministry and the Students’ Affairs Department (S.A.D) in each public university have been manipulated by political party and lose their autonomy.

DEMA felt that the S.A.D must realise its responsibility as to manage the welfare of students. While two female undergraduates from UKM were robbed and almost got raped because an illegal bus went into the campus, the UKM security vehicles appeared in front of the action room of MCA, Machap. It is obvious that the S.A.D is using the public fund to do something out of its job coverage instead of paying effort in fulfilling its responsibility.

Establishing election monitoring committee by Higher Education Ministry and is a waste of money. The government allocates quite a large amount of funds to Higher Education Institutions every year to develop the quality of academics as well as enhance the students’ welfare. The funds are not for election monitoring.

The purpose of the election monitoring committee is to monitor if students involve in campaigning for opposition party. DEMA pointed out that to stand as a candidate or involve in campaigning is a citizen’s rights which given by the Federal Constitution. Students do not have to get permission from the Higher Education Ministry to be involved in politics. University as a public machinery becomes a tool for political party is a signage of abuse of power.

Finally, DEMA urged Higher Education Minister to dismiss the election monitoring committee. Higher Education Ministry needs to reveal the expenses of the committee as well so that the public would know how much public fund has been wasted.
